Founded in 1979, the Deutsche Sprachschule Halton is a non-profit German language school
for adults and students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 located at T.A. Blakelock High School,
in Oakville, Ontario, about 40 kilometres west of Toronto. Classes are held on Saturday mornings,
9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon from September till June. It is a continuous-entry German language program.
There are approximately 240 students taught by 16 teachers and educational assistants.
The school is part of the Halton District School Board and its curriculum adheres to the “Leitfaden”
of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education
in Ontario. The staff is following the principles of the Association of German Language Schools
of Canada (KVDS):
- provide instruction that is sound in methods and didactics
- follow the curriculum
- attempts to offer levels of graduation
- orients itself on The Common European Reference Framework for Languages
- employs suitable and qualified teachers
- is open to all who want to learn German
- conveys socio-cultural values and knowledge of or about the German speaking area (the global world)
Each grade level has two separate streams: one stream is for students who have a working knowledge
of the German language, the other stream is for beginners. The teacher-to-student ratio is approximately
one teacher to every fifteen students.
Why learn German?
Learning a foreign language makes sense in today’s global society and it is an enjoyable and meaningful experience
for all children. As children develop confidence in their ability to use their heritage language or any other language,
they will experience a greater sense of pride in their cultural heritage and they will be able to contribute more fully
in Canada’s multicultural society.
